Aging Gracefully

Aging Gracefully

Aging gracefully is about surrendering ourselves to the flow of our lives.

Aging gracefully is about appreciating every passing phase as we transition through our life, recognizing the beauty which can be found in each new chapter.

So often we hang on to our youth, desperate never to grow old. Unfortunately this is just another misguided misconception we have of youth because in reality, youth is completely overrated. The underpaid jobs and long hours, the buses and public transport, the dismal bank balances and student loans, the cheating and immaturity, parents divorcing, the heartache, low self esteem, constantly having to prove our worth and find our place in a society which bullies us into conforming to outdated traditions and substandard lifestyles….With so much stress and uncertainty our youth just comes and goes, only leaving us with a sense of regret for a youth not properly enjoyed.

Our culture worships the beauty and vitality associated with youth, but in the process we completely overlook the joys of aging, and there is a definite beauty in aging gracefully.

We have so much to look forward to as we age. With age comes wisdom, and with wisdom, greater wealth, financial peace of mind and the ability to afford the finer things in life. Only with age comes the experience which makes us truly capable of having more authentic and stronger relationships, a more harmonious life, the knowledge of what is really important to us, and the confidence to stand up for what we believe in. Personally I will happily forfeit a youthful complexion for the peace, confidence and security that age will bring!

It is still possible to look great when you are 40, 50, 60 and beyond. Beauty changes overtime, but is still as beautiful. Just as a clear blue sky in Summer has its breathtaking merits, so does the snow-capped mountains during winter. Same life, just a different season.

The key to growing old gracefully is in this moment right now : LOVE, happiness, kindness and a great attitude for life. Embrace your life! Live your youth to the maximum, then grow old with people who will love you, wrinkles, dangling bits and all. Have an entire life full of adventure and great memories, always be kind to your mind, body and spirit : eat fresh and wholesome food, drink plenty of water, maintain low stress levels, exercise regularly, keep a positive outlook on life, develop a peaceful and happy mind – these all have subtle effects on our long term health and appearance; and then as your life inevitably transitions through to old age, you will simply smile and take it in your stride.

So stop being scared and instead love the process – aging gracefully is a beautiful experience!

Experience, experience, experience – that is the purpose of our life! Experience the best that life has to offer. Be happy. Embrace every single phase of your life because each phase brings new joys, experiences and teachings for you, then when you do get to the final chapter, you will be an old, wise and active elder of your community, someone that the young turn to for advice, guidance and support. You will be able to share your knowledge and wisdom and help others to live a happy and peaceful life, their Ultimate Lifestyle, too.

So the next time you look in the mirror, smile and admire those fine lines starting to appear and be at peace with it, knowing that once you have lived your life as you should, that when you do die, there will be no regrets and only a life worthy of memoirs.

  1. Liara Covert says:

Bob Proctor is a motivational speaker makes this profound statement:
“You are the only problem you will ever have and you are the only solution. Change is inevitable, personal growth is always a personal decision.”

He also offers perspectives on aging. Although he is perceived to be ‘getting on in years,’ he explains what people say is brainwashing. He says old people expect to get sicker, weaker and more fatigued. He chooses to feel younger, more energetic and healthier than people much younger. How you feel is a choice. How you live is a choice.
