Corrupted Pride
Be warned, pride is a very useful state of mind, but all too often our pride is exaggerated and ultimately corrupted by ego which will be detrimental for you to live your best life and be happy.
Pride is a very natural and healthy human emotion. We feel pride as the result of hard work and accomplishments. Pride fuels our desire to continue succeeding, creating and developing. Pride has been responsible for the development of some of our worlds most incredible art and human accomplishments.
But pride without awareness distorts into ego and we develop a sense of grandeur about ourselves, a distorted sense of self perception. Instead of being humble about our intentions and achievements, being happy and creating for the joy of creating, we become excited and allow our ego to run wild as we start to imagine stories of the subsequent success, riches and wild-scale recognition that will surely result from our work.
We get lost in the fantasy of future success and let that fuel our desire, but this only leads to disappointment because ultimately the final result rarely eventuates into what we had imagined it would be. Now, instead of being proud of our accomplishments, we become ashamed and disheartened because we perceive the end result as being a failure when compared to our fairy-tale success, when in truth we really should be proud of that achievement.
To master your pride, you need to stay aware and be on guard.
With your immediate project, do you have high expectations and grand dreams of it? Are you imagining all of your friends and family being in awe of your completed master piece? Do you foresee the general public applauding it as worthy of the Wall of Fame? Are you already fantasizing about privet jets and limousines?
Be aware of these thoughts and know that this is just your ego. Label those thoughts as ego when they arise, say “oh, that is just my ego again”! then bring your focus back to your project. Sounds stupid, but it works! Over time this process will come naturally, but you need to stay vigilant because your ego is as much a part of you as anything else and will not be leaving you in peace any time soon.
Even if your project has a business focus and it is intended to be a financial vehicle for you to live your best life, then while it is important to consider your target audience and have a general idea of the future financial potential, you still need to remain completely humble about your work. Do NOT boast to friends, family, colleagues or strangers about how incredible your plan is and how amazing it is going to be, because the reality is, you just do not know. It is better to develop your project without any egotistical expectations of the outcome, and essentially be doing it for the love of it. This approach frees you of the burden of expectations. Whatever your final product is, you will be proud of and then whatever success, money or recognition does result, is just plain fantastic and true happiness will ensue.
