Rock Climbing Monday, Exciting News Wednesday, Great Development Thursday….
What a week. Monday was spent Rock Climbing in the mountains north of Madrid on 50 meter vertical cliff walls. The first 15 meters are always easy, then you realize how far you have to fall if you slip and the anxiety and adrenalin kicks in. Being a natural blonde, I was totally unprepared and had no gloves. It was bitter cold so within minutes my fingers were frozen and aching, and my once beautiful long fingernails were mauled and fit for a leeper. We were using the proper safety equipment, which means I was harnessed in and had someone on the ground keeping the rope tight so in case I did fall I would not plummet to my death, but rather just hang rather uncomfortably with the harness up my backside instead.
After climbing as far as my body would take me I came to a seemingly impossible situation. There was no way up and no way sideways. I had run out of foot holds and microscopic ledges to cling to. My body was shaking and after a few minutes of contemplating my situation, I reluctantly screamed my defeat to my spotter at the foot of the mountain, telling him I was giving up and to let me come down.
But he refused and a standoff ensued. I let go of the cliff wall and swung free, letting myself dangle 20 meters above earth, stubbornly refusing to attempt to climb higher, but he stubbornly refused to loosen the rope and let me down. It was the ultimate standoff. For minutes neither of us did anything. He ate his sandwich and started a conversation about how much he was looking forward to a beer and tapas after the climb, and I sat high above him with the harness cutting off circulation to my reproductive organs, arms painfully crossed in defiance.
In the end we compromised, I took my place once again on the impossibly vertical cliff and on the count of 3 he pulled and I jumped high. It was just the extra leverage I needed to reach the next spot on the cliff, after that, it was “smooth” sailing.
After, the group drank beer, ate tapas, then had a typical home made Spanish meal while drinking a bottle of local red wine.
Tuesday I could not move.
Wednesday brought exciting news, which I can not tell you about.
Thursday I was invited to join a DJ collective here in Madrid, which is the perfect opportunity to get into the music scene. The collective are planning their first party in a 3000 strong venue in January so I will be involved with promotion, Dj’ing (if not this party, definitely the next) and all issues relating to event management. Great experience and exposure. Of course we will be collaborating on music production projects as well, and plan to start producing early next week.
Today is Friday and was spent eating chocolate, staring at my computer screen and at times feeling the stirrings of being overwhelmed by “My Very Awesome TO DO List” (yes, it’s really called that).
My top priorities right now are to sort through 2000, yes TWO THOUSAND new dj tracks released in the last two weeks. Literally mining for those little musical gems to add to my collection. So if anyone thought DJ’s had it easy, think again, there is so much more to it than you would ever imagine!
