The notion of living a monastic life in a monastery hidden faraway in the mountains somewhere, totally detached from mainstream life, spending each passing day in the warm glow of serenity and tranquility, focusing purely on developing a peaceful mind while being surrounded by like minded souls all on the same path, everyone supporting each other to live your best life is admittedly, very tempting and alluring.
The monastic lifestyle, due to the major lack of external stimulation, provides the perfect environment to encourage and develop a peaceful mind and awareness through the disciplined and continuous practice of “Zen”. Over time, the life becomes a meditation in itself and transforms your mentality to one of acceptance, peace and happiness.
But then it always dawns on me, while the experience would be nice, imagine how much of real LIFE and LIVING we would miss out on. Because if the point of the life is to experience and be happy, then while the monastic life definitely has its virtues, it is also defying the entire purpose of living as well.
So instead of sacrificing the best of life for a monastic zen experience, let us join both lives together and live a Spiritually Hedonistic life by incorporating the teachings and mindsets of spiritual zen into our active and exciting lives. The perfect middle path.
So I encourage you to live your best life. Go to parties, embrace your sexuality, be wild, enjoy your youth, follow your heart, laugh, sing, dance, skinny dip at midnight if the water is warm enough, be free AND bring the following principles into your daily life :
* Observe the drama, do not partake.
* Selflessly giving.
* Total kindness and compassion.
* Non attachment of all things especially money.
* Trust in your intuition and your journey on earth
It will be the ultimate challenge to practice zen amongst the chaos and activity of our lives, but one we are all capable of taking on.
Of course there are many, many more zen practices which they teach and this is just grazing the surface, but by implementing the above disciplines into your life and beginning to live a Spiritually Hedonistic life you will find, that just as will happen in a secluded monastery, your life will transform over time to one of peace and happiness but you will have the added delightful bonus of having lived your best life and experienced the best of life.
